Abtox Sterilization System May Hurt People's Corneas
On April 2, 1998, FDA announced a warning and recall of the AbTox Plazlyte Sterilization System manufactured by
Abtox, Inc. of Mundelein, Illinois.
At least 10 serious injuries to people's corneas have been reported when eye surgeons used the sterilization
system to sterilize their surgical instruments. The problem, according to FDA, appears to be formation of a
toxic salt from the chemical sterilants when the device is used on surgical tools made of copper, brass or zinc.
